About Spinning Jenny

Spinning Jenny was started by Jennifer Whitaker of Bradley, near Skipton, in the 1960s, supplying needlework products throughout the UK and the world. Cross-stitch kits and tramme tapestries were her mainstay together with Appleton’s wool and DMC threads and needlework fabrics and canvas.

In 1996, Wendy Riley bought the business and moved it to Kildwick, near Keighley, carrying on the tradition of selling quality goods to the discerning embroiderer, locally, nationally and internationally. She was ably assisted for many years by Ann Briggs, giving service and advice on all matters stitching.

After 11 years, the business was moved to Flasby, in rural premises overlooking the beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside just outside Skipton - the Gateway to the Dales. The shop continued to trade through the COVID-19 pandemic, partly by concentrating on online sales and managing the shop by appointment once the rules allowed.

In August 2021, Wendy retired after 25 years (to the day) running the business, and handed the reins to Jacquie Morley and Stephanie Haithwaite: friends who decided to take the plunge and buy the business together.

Jacquie is the craft and needlework guru who loves nothing better than to be surrounded by craft projects, and Stephanie brings experience of running businesses of all kinds to the partnership. Her abilities in terms of needlework are somewhat limited, but she tries to keep up...

Together, Spinning Jenny continues to offer the best of product, service and advice on all matters stitching – Spinning Jenny is THE needlework specialist and will continue to be into its second half century.
